Recommended Reading

Ministry

The Urban Christian
by Ray Bakke with Jim Hart
(Downers Grove, Illinois: InterVarsity Press, 1987)

Many believers are intimidated by city culture and have walked away from it. The author gives an excellent biblical foundation for God’s care for the city and how the local church can be a part of its restoration.

Funding Your Ministry
by Scott Morton
(Colorado Springs: Dawsonmedia / Navigators, 1999)

Fundraising can be a real obstacle for potential missionaries and those who send them. The author offers practical advice for recruiting donor support, beginning with developing a biblical attitude toward fundraising.

Reaching the Resistant–Barriers and Bridges for Mission
by J. Dudley Woodberry, editor
(Pasadena, Cal.: William Carey Library, 1998)

Resistance to the Gospel is not the same as rejection of the Gospel. There are barriers that can be overcome when thoughtful, careful and prayerful planning is done to reach those who have yet to respond to the truths of Christ.

Leadership

Encouraging the Heart—A Leader’s Guide To Rewarding And Recognizing Others
by James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner
(San Francisco: Jossey-Bass Inc., 1999)

This book offers a practical and realistic approach to showing appreciation to those who serve with you in ministry. While not a biblically oriented text, it provids practical ideas for demonstrating that you care about the people you lead.

Whiteman’s Gospel
by Craig Stephen Smith (Winnipeg: Indian Life Books, 1997)

Christianity was born in a culture that was suppressed and a minority ethnic group. This book gives excellent insight into the issues of Native American ministries and how to help develop a balanced view of Christianity in culture.

The Art of Crossing Cultures
by Craig Storti
(Yarmouth, Maine: Intercultural Press, 2nd ed., 2001)

This book gives great insight into the issues that are involved in cross-cultural change. It is written for the business community, but the principles therein can be equated to the Christian experience.

Culture

What Color Is Your God?
by James & Lillian Breckenridge
(Grand Rapids: Baker Books, 1995)

Any church that desires to reach a culturally diverse community would profit a great deal from an examination of this text. The task of reaching a multicultural community is more difficult than the task of a foreign missionary. Education in the church will prepare people for reaching people of other distinct groups.

The Lexus and the Olive Tree
by Thomas L. Friedman
(New York: Anchor Books / Random House, 2000)

This is an excellent introduction to globalization from a secular perspective, showing what is occurring in our world in politics, economics, business, culture, and traditions. While not from a biblical point-of-view, it is enlightening to understand the significance of the shrinking global village.

Communicating Christ Cross-Culturally
by David J. Hesselgrave
(Grand Rapids: Zondervan Publishing House, 2nd ed., 1991)

While this text can be overwhelming because of its technical and comprehensive nature, it is also extremely helpful in understanding the vastly varied components of communicating Christ in a growing multicultural society.

Post-Modern Pilgrims
by Leonard Sweet
(Nashville, Tenn.: Broadman & Holman Publishers, 2000)

The author appeals for epic changes in this rapidly changing society. Churches must be experiential, participatory, image-driven, and connected if they expect to impact our culture for Christ.
